The Fun Of Choosing a Pet Name For Your Dog or Puppy

Pet Names for Dogs and Puppies

When we get a new puppy or a new adult dog, no matter what dog breed it is, we always want to find the perfect pet name that fits us, goes with our lives, and our personality. And maybe you go about choosing a name the way I love to do and that is to choose a name that goes with the looks or the character of the dog or with some of its specifics. Another way to get a name for your new companion could be making a list with names that every family member has come up with and try and choose one of the names on the list that everyone can agree with. If it is hard to settle for a name that everyone likes, well, just get your grand dads old high hat out of the basement and put it to use by throwing in pieces of paper with all the names and let every family member pick one. This already narrows it down to a few. Then put these few names back into the hat and get one of you to pick the piece of paper with the pet name for your new dog or puppy. This way every family member has a say about the name for your new dog or puppy.

Years ago, I finally got the so much desired beautiful little blonde Lab puppy. And of course the subject of the pet name came up and every family member added several to the list. From the funniest ones to the sweetest ones but we could not really decide on how we were going to name our little puppy. I went to visit the puppies and the mother almost every day and the more I saw her, the older she grew, the more I held and cuddled her, the name Sandy came up. Because of the beautiful soft sandy coat that started to grow on her adorable little body and everyone in our family agreed that our newest family member would go by the name of Sandy. Sometimes you need to see the puppy and play with her a little and then just follow your gut feeling to pick the pet name that goes with your dog or puppy.

Some tips for when you choose a pet name for your dog

Try and keep the pet name you choose short and simple, one or two syllables if possible, so it will be easier for the puppy to recognize its own name.

Keep in mind you will have to train your puppy and teach it to understand the meaning of sit, stay, no, heel and a lot of other short commands. Try not to choose a name that would sound too much alike or your puppy might get confused.

For the same reason it would be good not to choose a pet name that sound too much like a name of yourself or one of your family members

If you choose a long pet name for your dog or puppy, remember that, just like human names, people will shorten it. Do the nicknames they can come up with sound good as well?

The breed of your dog could also help you choose the pet name for your dog. Try and find information about the dog breed and pick the names and words that you can use for a name.

While I was trying to think of pet names, I remembered something that happened years ago. It is really a great little story that shows how choosing the name that goes with your pet might mean something completely different to you than to any body else. Late one night Nathalie, my oldest girl, and I were walking Sandy in the park right next to our house. We were getting closer to the lake that was surrounded by open fields and a lot of bushes and shrubs on the edges. From afar we heard a mens voice calling out: BERTHA COME HERE! Sandy was sniffing around not too far away from us, without looking too upset from hearing what we thought to be an impressive name. When we kept on hearing someone calling for his BERTHAAAAAAAAAAA!!! we went over and put Sandy back on her leash. Any moment we expected one huge hunk of a dog to come crashing through the bushes without its owner being in sight. We were so sure Bertha was somewhere close, lurking in the dark, waiting for the right moment. After the first noise coming from the shrubs we stood still, keeping Sandy close to us on a very short leash, waiting uncomfortably for the events to unroll. We kept on hearing something moving around through the dead leaves on the ground till, all of a sudden it was there, surprisingly without making hardly any noise. The cutest little Dachs Hound came cheerfully walking up to us, almost wagging its little tail of its butt and so ready to be our friend. She seemed to be laughing just as loud as we were and I am sure I saw a smug look on her little face for pulling this joke on us together with its owner. Bertha sure made an everlasting impression, cause every now and then we still talk about this hair raising event.

The greater part of the pet names mentioned here have a meaning. It would go a bit too far to go into the meaning of each and every name you see here. If you do find a pet name you like and you care to know what it means, entering a search for -meaning of names- will come up with a list of websites to look up the meaning of names. You will be amazed to see how beautiful and surprising the meaning of a lot of names is.

Have fun choosing a pet name for your new puppy or dog, however keep in mind that whatever pet name you choose that you will have to use it in public some day. At the time it may sound so great to choose a funny pet name for your dog or puppy. But how would you ever be able to explain to your 6 and a half foot tall, short tempered neighbor that you are only calling your doggie when you yell: Nitwit come here!
